Power, Toughness, Mana Cost and Color

Power, toughness, mana cost and color are all linked. Some colors might be more attack focused, or defensive while others are more balanced. Obviously more powerful cards cost more mana to bring into the game. The same holds for cards with a higher toughness. Finally, we would expect cards with higher power or toughness to also be rarer. We explore these things further on this page.

Below, you can find a heat map showing the relation between power and toughness. You can select a color (or all colors, or colorless) to filter this data. Multiple colors can be selected to compare the data. Finally, it is possible to enable a mana cost slider. This then shows how mana cost factors in to the equation. By moving the slider, you can see how mana cost is directly proportional to power and toughness.

For example, we can see that white is a defensive color, while red is more focused on attack. Green is a balanced color featuring cards with some of the highest power and toughness values.

The following plot is a heatmap showing how cards are distributed in terms of rarity. You can select a color (again, or all colors, or even colorless) can be selected to see this data. Multiple colors can be selected to compare the data. Finally, you can select which property you want to compare to rarity. The possible options are power, toughness and mana cost. It is clear that the most powerful cards are rare and mythic cards, but this plot also shows that by far, the most cards have a power or toughness of 2 and a mana cost of 3.
